RL with Yukiko, backdated to August 2

[At the end of a relatively successful maybe-date-depending-on-which-of-the-two-you-ask...]

As the credits began to roll, the lights in the theater came back on. Karen glanced down at herself and brushed away some bits of popcorn clinging to her shirt before turning to look at Yukiko.

"Yes, it's getting a bit late, anyway." Not that Karen would actually have minded staying out longer. She turned towards where Yukiko was supposed to worldhop back, but didn't move, and looked like she was thinking something over.

Yukiko didn't much mind being out late either, aside from the fact that she usually got in trouble for it. Not a lot of trouble...Yukiko rarely got a lecture, just a bit of a scolding.

She actually started towards where she would get a hop home, walking a few steps before she realized Karen wasn't following her, and she turned back, her hands folding behind her back. "Are you alright?"

"I'm fine," Karen said nervously, taking a step towards Yukiko. "...I really did have a good time tonight."

Her own hands were clenched together in a very atypical way for her.

"Well, so did I. It was nice to do something with someone new, really." She smiled reassuringly, but her head was tilted to the side, watching Karen. She was noticing the obvious change in demeanor, as it were.

"Are you sure you're alright? You seem...tense."

"No, I--" Karen stopped in mid-sentence. Continued explanations would only make things worse at this point. It was time for action.

She took a deep breath, let it out, and kissed Yukiko.

Of all the possible things that could have happened at that moment, Karen kissing Yukiko had not even entered into the poor girls mind. She doesn't kiss her back, she just sort of stands there, stiff as a board for several seconds....

And then...SLAP! The infamous Yukiko Slap! Usually reserved for boys, though Karen is apparently a special expection.

"W-what are you doing?!"

That was absolutely not the reaction Karen had expected. Maybe being pushed away, but certainly not slapped. It hurt, too.

"I--I thought--" she stammered uselessly.

It took her a few seconds to realize she'd slapped Karen, which...judging by the other girls stuttering, wasn't really what she had expected. "I'm sorry!" Rushed out as the other started talking, and Yukiko started to realize what was going on.

Oh...no.

"You just, you just startled me and...Why did you kiss me?"

A similar realization was beginning to dawn on Karen.

"Because we... I thought... you... I-I'm sorry!"

"B-but, I thought...I thought we were just...uh...hanging..." Yukiko stops mid-sentence, drawing in a slow breath, just staring at the blue haired girl.

"Was this a date?!"

"Was it--you thought--"

And now everything clicked.

"I'm sorry I wasn't trying to trick you or anything I really thought you were interested not that you did anything strange it was all my mistake and I'm sorry!"

Yukiko just sort of stared at the other girl. "But...why? I mean, I never...and I'm not a...at least, I don't think I am, I never really...not that there's anything wrong with...and why would you..." She stopped trying to say anything coherent and just frowned at the ground for a moment.

"I'm sorry." She finally managed. What in the world was SHE apologizing for?

For the part of Karen's face that's a slightly different shade of red for a significantly different reason, presumably.

"It's my fault. I probably said something misleading." She tried to remember what her phrasing had been. "I'll understand if you... don't want to see me again."

"I-I just thought you wanted to, you know, hang out and go see a movie. I don't...I'm not very good with things like this, Chie is usually the one that..." Yukiko trails off and shakes her head.

"No, I really did have a nice time tonight." Trust Yukiko to try and fix everything. "I just...I don't...I'm sorry I don't think I'm like that?"

"That's fine, I just... wish I'd realized it sooner." Karen just managed a smile through all her embarrassment. "I'll just have to keep trying."

This was going to be an awkward walk back to the warehouse, though.

"It's...alright." Yukiko would say, and then she'd smile. "And I-I'm sure you'll find someone! Eventually. There's somebody for everybody, right?"

Yukiko isn't quite sure what to do now, though. Or what to say. "So, uh...does that mean you didn't want to be my friend? Just...you know...try to date me?"

Didn't want to--

"No. No, no, no. I definitely want to be your friend."

Yukiko seems genuinely relieved to hear that. "Oh good! Because, I...don't really have a lot of friends." She'd smile brightly.

"And...I really am sorry this went all...funny. We can't let this stop us from talking or anything though, yes?"

"Of course." There was absolutely no hesitation.

...and then she did hesitate before adding "...but we probably shouldn't tell anyone about what happened."

Yukiko's smile got a bit wider, and she nodded at the certainty in Karen's voice.

But then her second statement made the black haired girl pause for a moment. "Well, alright. I'll probably tell Chie...she'll know something strange happened immediately, she always seems to..."

Karen almost protested, but stopped. "I just don't want it all over the community. You probably don't, either."

"Well...Alright, I will try not to tell anyone. But Chie always seems to know." Yukiko had an absent sort of smile as she shrugged.

"But...aside from this, I did have a very nice evening, Karen." She added, wanting to reassure the other girl they were okay. She felt terrible for slapping her!

Karen was going to have to make sure Jiiya didn't see that part of her face. She'd concealed the entire population of Palmier from him once, though, so this wasn't beyond her capability.

"I'm glad."

That's pretty much Yukiko's canon reaction to stuff like this.

Karen doesn't have one, because the writers decided she didn't really need a love life. :|
